Muslim Times 360: A timely counter narrative on Muslim issues

After successfully defying all odds in the last eight years of its existence, in terms of scarce financial resources, limited human capital, non-orthodox content, and

non-conventional style of reporting; The New Dawn publication has finally decided to change its name to “Muslim Times 360” beginning with the next issue. The significance of the newly adopted name lies more in its clearly visible non-partisan identity and the thematic direction that we are going  to focus on. This will help our local and international readership easily identify and appreciate the source of the rarely covered Muslim news and its unique presentation.

The problem of finding proper, credible and professionally packaged Muslim news today is two-fold. First, the international media and the local mainstream media that are generously endowed with financial, human and technological capital have managed to define what constitutes Muslim news. Muslim news is presented in a heavily subjective manner with emphasis on isolated negative cases given extravagant coverage aimed at driving certain agendas. What is therefore consumed by readers in the name of Muslim news has been instrumental in spreading misconceptions about Islam and Muslims. The painful reality is that this is what has come to shape world opinion about Islam and Muslims albeit negatively.

Secondly, inspite of their sincere intentions, majority of traditional Muslim publications focus exclusively on spiritual and religious teachings that may be of little interest to non- Muslim readership. Worse still, in response to international media, some Muslim publications have unfortunately adopted apologetic language in trying  to explain the truth about Islam and Muslims; while others, as a reaction, have chosen defensive positions and gone to extremes to present the west negatively in their attempts to portray Islam and Muslims positively. Fighting and removing this deliberately imposed ignorance about Islam and Muslims through the media,  in an informed, professional and objective manner is therefore something yet to be achieved. Islam is one of the world’s greatest religions with a population of about 1.5 billion. Its fundamental teachings contain universal values that have contributed immensely to world civilization in the last more than 1400 years. The Islamic concepts of love and brotherhood of mankind, social justice, peace and coexistence, are issues that have never been adequately covered by the media. The importance of inter-religious dialogue and respect for other faiths and cultures in Islam, that Muslim Times 360 intends to give paramount importance and coverage, is rarely highlighted.

The role of Muslim organizations in humanitarian activities like food relief, water development and health does not get the coverage it deserves. Fighting social evils like drug-addiction, alcoholism, prostitution, homosexuality and crime is something Muslims are at the forefront but not known outside Muslim circles. Islamic judicial system and its exceptional role in family welfare and stability is something that needs to be appreciated. Running of educational institutions from madrassa to university continues to receive little recognition both officially and unofficially. Islamic banking is the fastest growing financial sector both locally and internationally, yet, the world is still in the dark regarding its merits and role in national socio-economic development. What about challenges facing Muslim youths in the world today and how they are being addressed? And the much publicized issue of women rights? The aforementioned issues and many others are the kind of relevant material that the international, local, and Muslim-focused media need to cover adequately and objectively.

In view of the obtaining scenario in the media circles, it is clear that there has been (and still there is) a vacuum of relevant, objective and positive content about Islam and Muslims. This is the gap that The New Dawn has strived to bridge in the last eight years. Most importantly, this is still the gap that Muslim Times 360 aims to fill in a more proactive manner from now onwards. This is by giving sufficient coverage to Muslim issues that have been deliberately, negligently or ignorantly marginalized. In other words, to give people a voice who otherwise would not have one. This is also by providing the much desired counternarrative on
Islam and Muslim issues and share a different point of view that may have not otherwise been considered and allow readers to have a rare channel for comparative perspectives on Muslim issues. In this endeavor, Muslim Times 360 will pay particular attention and strive to cater for the tastes of all readers regardless of religion or cultural background. In addition, Muslim Times 360 will incorporate a digital platform that will offer our readers, corporations and advertisers video streaming capabilities to enable access to news through our website as well as provide a digital channel to market their products and services
