Joyce Nairesia, Samburu Council of Elders Isiolo branch chairperson, have called upon parents, especially mothers, to be in the forefront in the fight against FGM instead of abetting it.

Speaking during the Internation Women’s Day festivities in Isiolo, Nairesia and other leaders said that FGM was an outdated practise. “The
fight must start with mothers. Let’s shape our girls’ minds in how to lead decent lives and let’s strongly condemn the cut,” she said. Nominated MCA Saadiya Abdi said FGM has been practised for a long time in the county, but has not brought any benefits. Traditional beliefs associated with the now-illegal practice no longer hold, Abdi said.
